Moissanite Jewelry Care and Clean Guide

JEWELRY CARE

KEEP YOUR JEWELRY AWAY FROM CHEMICALS

Exposure to chemicals can damage or discolor precious metals like gold, silver and platinum and may harm some colored gems. Even everyday substances like hairspray, lotion, perfume or other cosmetics can contain chemicals that will permanently damage the surface of your pearls and other delicate or porous gems. Fine jewelry should be removed before diving into a chlorinated swimming pool or before using household cleaners. Many of these cleaners contain ammonia, which can be too harsh for delicate gems or vintage jewelry. Chlorine bleach, another common household solvent, can pit or damage gold alloys.

THE SAFEST AND THE EASIEST CLEANING METHODS

Most colored gems can be cleaned with warm water, mild dish soap (no chemicals) and a soft brush. A pulsed-water dental cleaning appliance and a soft, lint free cloth can also be used. Be sure to rinse your jewelry in a glass of water to remove cleaning solutions since you risk losing loose stones or even an entire piece of jewelry if you rinse directly in the sink. Soft gems, such as pearls, on the other hand, can easily scratch. Use a new, clean makeup brush and warm, soapy water to softly clean them. Lay a strand of pearls on a towel to dry. The wet silk thread can stretch and attract dirt so don’t touch your strand until it is completely dry. Pearls worn often should be restrung once a year.

SAFELY STORE YOUR JEWELRY

Proper jewelry storage is often overlooked. Jewelry should never be tossed into a drawer or on top of a dresser that’s asking for scratches and damaged gems. Most jewelry pieces come in a box or pouch from the store, which is a perfect place to keep them. Sterling silver, for example, should be kept in an anti-tarnish bag or cloth. Jewelry boxes that feature individually padded slots for rings and posts for hanging necklaces and bracelets are also ideal.

GOLD JEWELRY CARE

To preserve the luster of your gold jewelry, avoid exposure to household bleach and other cleaning products, which will quickly cause gold to discolor and possibly disintegrate. We recommend that you store your gold jewelry in a safe place when engaging in these activities:

  • Household and outdoor chores (cleaning and gardening)
  • Showering, bathing or swimming in pools.
  • Using lotion, hair products, fragrances and other cosmetics.
  • Exercising at the gym or during contact sports.
  • Preparing meals.

Between wearings, we recommend that you place your gold jewelry back in its pouch for safekeeping.

HOW TO CLEAN GOLD JEWELRY?

  1. Place your gold jewelry into the jewelry cleaner solution.
  2. After two minutes, use a pair of tweezers to remove your jewelry from the solution.
  3. Gently clean behind the settings and in between crevices with a soft bristle brush to remove any debris.
  4. Rinse, blot dry and shine your gold jewelry with polishing

STERLING SILVER JEWELRY CARE

Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to salty air, chlorine, sulfur, humidity, perspiration, cosmetics, household bleach and other strong chemicals. To prevent tarnish as much as possible, we recommend that you store your fine jewelry in a safe, dry place when engaging in the following activities:

  • Household and outdoor chores
  • Showering, bathing or swimming in pools, hot tubs, hot springs and the ocean
  • Using lotion, hair products, fragrances and other cosmetics
  • Exercising at the gym or during contact sports
  • Preparing meals

Storing sterling silver in the flannel pouch provided with your purchase will help prevent tarnish.

HOW TO CLEAN STERLING SILVER?

  1. Apply a small amount of silver jewelry cleaner to a soft cloth.
  2. Gently rub the silver with the cloth several times.
  3. Rinse the silver thoroughly in warm water.
  4. Blot dry and shine your silver with our polishing cloth or mitts. This will remove the tarnish and restore shine.

GEMSTONES AND PEARL CARE

Diamond, gemstone and pearl jewelry needs to be treated with care. Even a diamond, the world’s hardest material, can be damaged under certain circumstances, and other gemstones are delicate. To prevent damage as much as possible, we recommend that you avoid exposing your diamond, gemstone and pearl jewelry to the following:

  • Variable temperatures
  • Perfumes and cosmetics
  • Ultrasonic cleaning
  • Household chemicals.
